Since the education is regularized by the conditions of study of the respective federal states, there are certain differences between each state. Basic studies

Education for becoming a food chemist in Germany can be divided into three sections. Basic studies are mostly congruent to those of normal chemistry. Essentials for chemical comprehension are taught and analytical techniques are learned in laboratory courses. Following four semesters of basic studies, preliminary exams have to be passed to proceed to main studies.

Main studies

The next four semesters are meant to deepen the knowledge gained so far by further laboratory courses. Thematic priority is set to instrumental analytics. Besides the analysis of foodstuffs and consumer goods, nutritional science, biological chemistry, toxicology, food technology, and food law also play a major role here.

Practical training

Following university education ending with the first state examination, prospective food chemists do one year of practical training with a chemical investigations office. Focus is set on the legal evaluation of foodstuffs, cosmetics, tobacco products and consumer goods. Trainees finish with the second state examination becoming officially recognized food chemists.
